Fire Protection Engineer in Training (EIT) - Now Hiring
The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) is a trade association representing and serving as the voice of the fire sprinkler industry.
The NFSA engineering staff provides technical support to our members through our expert of the day (EOD) service, issuance of TechNotes, delivery of online Tech Tuesday seminars, and in a variety of other ways.
NFSA represents the sprinkler industry on numerous technical committees (TCs) including dozens of TCs for NFPA codes and standards, ICC building and fire code committees, AWWA, ISO and many others key organizations effecting sprinkler systems and other water-based fire protection systems.
NFSA is also active in the development of technical literature, books, and training courses.
NFSA offers a broad range of opportunities to develop and expand technical skills, increase the number of lives saved from fire, and help in providing better fire protection through the widespread acceptance of the fire sprinkler concept.
This Fire Protection Engineer (EIT) supports the mission of the National Fire Sprinkler Association by providing technical services to the members of the association.
Such services include representation on technical committees of multiple organizations, organizing and disseminating research of various aspects of sprinkler system performance, preparing written materials on the installation of water-based fire protection systems, and developing and teaching seminars from beginner to advanced levels of experience.
The responsibilities of the Fire Protection Engineer (EIT) include:
Represent NFSA on codes and standards committees.
Serve as expert of the day (EOD) responding to requests for information.
Serve as speaker at NFSA meetings and fire related industry meetings.
Coordinate research on behalf of the fire sprinkler industry on topics as assigned.
Write articles in support of NFSA publications.
Assist with development and delivery of training materials and publications.
Assist with research projects.
Other duties as assigned that are necessary for the fulfilment of the NFSA's mission.
The focus of Fire Protection Engineer (EIT) is working with and through others, building and maintaining relationships, and working within groups.
There is a need for an effective communicator, someone who is able to stimulate and motivate others while being aware of and responsive to their needs and concerns.
There will be many different people to meet and work with.
The person in this position must be friendly and genuinely interested in the business, agenda, and needs of others, including the association, its management, the team, the association's members, or all of the above.
A persuasive, teaching style of communication is required to communicate the association's policies, programs, and systems.
A faster-than-average pace will be the norm for this position.
Detail work is a major focus of the job, and those details need to be handled quickly, correctly, and efficiently.
This portion of the work will often focus on relationships with others; correct handling of details dealing with others is necessary to maintain and grow relationships.
Necessary corrections must be made in a constructive, supportive manner.
As time is usually a factor, the work must be done on time, as well as correctly.
NFSA's compensation package includes a 401(k) retirement plan, health/dental/vision insurance, and starts with two weeks of paid vacation time with other personal time off.
This position can be remote to NFSA Headquarters in Maryland.
This position reports to the Chief Engineer and requires strong technical aptitude, self-motivation, and a passion for fire protection and life safety.
Applicants should possess strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
This position requires a degree in fire protection engineering or related technical field with consideration added for advanced degrees.
Experience in the design of sprinkler systems or fire protection engineering is preferred.
Applicants should have 0 to 4 years of experience and an engineer-in-training (E.

) certificate, with the ability to obtain a professional engineering license within four years.
